John Gilbert Nature Trail

Trail features: 1/4 mile in length; Two footbridges; Observation deck on marsh; Boardwalk; John's Oak.

Named for John Gilbert.

First nature trail built by the St. Simons Land Trust.

Construction began November, 2006. Elite Landscaping and Cumberland Contractors, Inc. volunteered their services for trail underbrushing/landscaping, and bridge construction services respectively.

Most of the trail was completed by the end of November, 2006. The main, wide path, and area around John's Oak was covered with pine straw. John's Oak, a live oak tree, much of which was dead, was pruned.

The public was asked to volunteer their help in the physical completion of the trail. The event was planned for December 9, 2006 at 9:00 a.m.

Editor (12/1/2006): In my opinion, the boardwalk is too much. Hopefully when it rots, it will simply be removed. You have to understand that, not the boardwalk itself, but the building of the boardwalk, is a device for getting the public involved. Which is great.
