Fire destroyed 39 of the 43 stores in the Brunswick Mall Tuesday, leaving millions of dollars in damage and about 1,000 people without jobs, officials said.

The fire was reported about 2:30 A.M. by a maintenance worker at a nearby K-Mart store, Fire Chief Tom Nichols said, adding that the blaze was difficult to fight because the mall, on the northeast side of the city, was isolated from the nearest water supply.

Sheila McNeill, president of the Mall Merchants Association, said about 1,000 mall employees would be without jobs as a result of the fire.
