Old Glynn Academy Building Sterling, Georgia

As you drive into Sterling from Brunswick on Hwy. 341, you will pass the Sterling Community Center on your right. The large two-story, frame, front gable building with a recessed, two-story portico supported by four large Doric columns is not native to its current location. The building was originally built in 1840 in Brunswick as a replacement for the first Glynn Academy building but was moved to Sterling in 1915. There it continued its service as a home for education, serving as school for African American children during segregation. It is considered to be the oldest standing wooden schoolhouse in Georgia. Now, the building at 7126 New Jesup Road is the community center for Sterling and is maintained by the Department of Leisure Services.
