Bartram Trail

Bartram Trail St. Simons Island, Georgia

William Bartram was a Quaker naturalist who toured the Southeast in the 1770s. On his way to Florida he came to St. Simons Island to write about Fort Frederica. The official Bartram Trail runs along Glynn County’s western border and is called Old Post Road. Old Post Road started in Savannah and snaked along Georgia’s coast to St. Mary’s where it turned and headed for Tallahassee, Florida. Interestingly, this road is almost identical to what used to be the edge of the North American continent 10,000 years ago. There is a Georgia Historical Marker just past the entrance to Fort Frederica detailing the history of William Bartram and his travels.
