Mary the Wanderer

St. Simon's Island is home to many tales of lost love and personal strife. Mary the Wanderer is said to roam the streets on her white horse searching for her lover who was lost in the waves of the ocean. In the evening, the walls of Christ Church Cemetery bear a mysterious flickering light. Legend holds that a young woman with a fearful dread of the dark was buried there, and after she died, her husband brought a candle to her grave each night. The flickering light remains to this day long after both of their deaths.

Long ago, it is said, a beautiful young woman was to be wed to her true love - but alas, the young man drowned when his boat capsized near shore. Forlorn, Mary killed herself. But late at night you may see her still, lantern held high, walking the beaches and forests of St. Simons Island in search of her lost love.
