Editor note (12/2/2006): I remember when I was young, my family and I would go to Epworth-by-the-Sea at Christmas time to see the Christmas light display. Each year the road, which entered Epworth at the south end of Gascoigne Bluff Park would be lined with small paper bags, filled partially with sand. In each bag there would be a lit candle. The road would be lined all the way through Epworth Acres, with the little paper lamps, or luminaries.
It was awesome! Am I right?
At this time they don't do it in Gascoigne Bluff, or at Epworth-by-the-Sea. Some residents of Epworth Acres still carry on this St. Simons Island Tradition.
If you want to see a little bit of this type of Christmas decoration in action, the Plantation Christmas at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site includes a luminary trail.
